Wildlife Haven — East Peoria, Illinois

Two nights among rescued creatures and quiet compassion — East Peoria taught us that some campgrounds have heartbeats.

Wildlife Haven in East Peoria is not a winery, not a farm stand — it’s a sanctuary, and staying there via Harvest Hosts feels like pitching in just by showing up with respect.

We booked two nights and took our time. Morning walks past enclosures came with education: who arrived injured, who couldn’t return to the wild, who had opinions about breakfast. Marla talked to an owl; Doug talked to a raccoon who clearly had legal representation.

Evenings were quiet in the best way — the Basecamp tucked near trees, Illinois River country soft in the distance. We donated, bought a shirt, and left lighter somehow, as if kindness were contagious through fence wire.

Silver Trekker verdict: Support places doing real work. Two nights let us breathe with the mission instead of rushing a photo op.
