Revelton Distilling — Osceola, Iowa

Our first night out with Silver Trekker: polished aluminum, open road, and a tasting flight that tasted like permission to keep going.

Every long journey has a first mile that feels different from all the rest. Ours started in Osceola, Iowa, with the Basecamp hitched behind us and a Harvest Hosts reservation at Revelton Distilling Company — our very first trip out as Silver Trekker.

We rolled in late afternoon, levelers down, awning out just far enough to mark the spot as home. The distillery sat close enough to walk, which is exactly the kind of math we bought a compact trailer to do. Inside, the air smelled like grain and patience — the good kind, the kind that waits in barrels until it becomes something worth toasting.

We pulled up stools and worked through a tasting flight the way newcomers do: slowly at first, then with the confidence of people who had earned an evening off from driving. Bourbon, maybe a seasonal pour, conversation with the folks behind the bar who didn’t treat us like tourists — just neighbors who had wandered in from the parking lot with an Airstream badge on their hitch.

Back at camp, the September light went gold over southern Iowa cornfields. We sat outside with our glasses and listened to the small sounds a first campsite teaches you: the tick of the trailer cooling, a distant dog, the satisfied quiet after a day that finally felt real. No epic summit, no ocean — just beginning, which turned out to be its own destination.

Marla raised her glass toward the Basecamp. Doug admitted he’d been nervous about the backing-in, the hookups, the whole performance of looking like we knew what we were doing. The whiskey didn’t fix any of that — it just made the worry smaller.

Silver Trekker verdict: If your first night on the road can be a distillery parking spot and a walk-up tasting, you’re doing something right. Osceola was proof the map had more stories than we guessed from Des Moines.
