Outer Banks, North Carolina
East Coast · Silver Trekker
The Outer Banks stretch like a ribbon between sound and sea. Doug and Marla parked at Oregon Inlet Campground and immediately learned that OBX wind does not negotiate. Kite surfers looked like punctuation marks on the horizon.
They climbed Bodie Island Lighthouse, toured the Wright Brothers National Memorial, and took a wild horse tour on the beach—Marla still talks about the colt that trotted alongside the dunes. Sand worked into floor mats, shoes, and humor.
A nor’easter brushed past and rattled the awning all night. Morning brought calm water and neighbors sharing hot coffee and stories of hurricanes survived. Doug tightened every latch; Marla wrote postcards with salt-stiff fingers.
Silver Trekker verdict: Wind, history, and wide beaches—bring tie-downs, patience, and a good broom.
