Great Smoky Mountains

Appalachia · Silver Trekker

The Smokies are America’s most-visited national park for good reason. Doug and Marla camped on the Tennessee side and woke to mist rolling off ridges like steam from a kettle.

Cades Cove loop at sunrise: turkeys, deer, and a bear crossing the road while Doug fumbled for binoculars. They hiked Laurel Falls with families from three countries and shared trail mix like diplomats.

Elk bugling near Oconaluftee Visitor Center at dusk sounded prehistoric. That night they made pancakes on the griddle attachment Doug swore was worth the storage space—Marla agreed after bite two.

Silver Trekker verdict: Crowd-worthy but worth it—go early, camp just outside the busiest loops, and bring bear-aware habits.
